How to warm up before strength training

A warm-up should make the first working set feel more prepared—not make you tired before the workout begins.

An effective warm-up moves from general to specific. Raise your temperature, explore the ranges you need that day, then rehearse the first demanding exercise with lighter resistance.

Simple warm-up: spend a few minutes moving easily, perform two or three relevant dynamic movements, then complete progressively heavier practice sets for the first primary lift.

Step 1: general movement

Walk, cycle, row, or move through easy bodyweight patterns until you feel warmer and more alert. This portion can be brief; it is preparation, not a separate conditioning block.

Step 2: relevant mobility

Choose mobility that matches the session. Ankle and hip movement may help before squats; shoulder and upper-back movement may fit pressing or pulling. Avoid collecting drills that have no relationship to the work ahead.

Step 3: specific rehearsal sets

Practice the first lift with little or no load, then add resistance in steps while keeping the repetitions low enough to avoid fatigue. Heavier or more technical work usually needs more rehearsal than a light accessory session.

Do you need static stretching first?

Long static holds are not required before lifting. If a brief stretch helps you access a comfortable position, follow it with active movement and exercise-specific practice. Longer flexibility work can live after training or in a separate mobility session.

Use the library to rehearse the movement

The Movviva Movement Library provides cues, common mistakes, equipment, and easier options. Reviewing the actual movement is often more useful than adding another generic warm-up circuit.
